Riding the Houtzdale Rail Trail and Discovering Local Rail History

Posted on December 1, 2020by Jody Arneson

Running just shy of 10.5 miles, the Houtzdale Rail Trail is a delightful little trail in Clearfield County between Oceola Mills and Smoke Run, PA. We had just enough time to ride a few miles in each directions, so we headed for the near geographic center of the trail, Houtzdale itself. The railtrail as it […]

A Four-State Vista from Dan’s Rock Overlook

Posted on November 3, 2020by Jody Arneson

Who is Dan and why’d he leave his rock at such a beautiful place? Then, why did he spraypaint gloriously colorful graffiti all over his rock? These are questions I asked as I climbed the steps to Dans Rock Overlook! Dans Rock Overlook is one of Maryland’s iconic overlooks and sits at the top of […]

Posted on March 19, 2020by Jody Arneson

Technology allows us to visit museums, see performances online, and peak into the private world of […]

Posted on May 8, 2018July 24, 2022by Jody Arneson

If you grew up in the United States and paid any attention at all to US History, it’s a name you’ve heard from childhood: Valley Forge. Images of a hard winter come to mind, a disorderly, ragtag and hungry army standing up against the British bullies — better armed, better clothed, better trained — and […]

A Year of Memory Making Mid-Atlantic Daytrips You Shouldn’t Miss in 2018

Posted on January 27, 2018by Jody Arneson

This year, like every year, I gave my family gifts that I thought reflected both me and them. And like every other year, I struggled to find that “perfect gift” — a thing of myth and legend — that will make my loved ones happy. Then it hit me — I actually write a blog […]

Posted on December 31, 2015by Jody Arneson

Well, I certainly could have done better on my 2015 wishlist — of the 11 items I wanted to do, I did 4 1/2 — the half being that, although I didn’t actually get there, a guest blogger kindly did the strenuous hiking up Maryland Heights (it’s straight up the side of a mountain). Check out […]

Starting an exploration of the #laurelhighlands #pourtour at #bellaterravineyards We really got a chance to learn about the plight of the wolves during our all-too-brief stay at Speedwell Forge B&B and the Wolf Sanctuary of PA. We are looking forward to the Howling with the Wolves bonfire tonight! We are back at the amazing, incredible Wolf Sanctuary of PA in Lititz! Because you simply cannot have too many photos of goats... Culpeper VA is a quaint town with rich history. Plus, the town has lots to offer daytrippers and weekenders alike. Less than an hour away from Shenandoah National Park and with several Civil War battlefields nearby, there’s lots to do and see during your stay! The Christmas spirits are gathering at the very haunted Linville Manor! https://midatlanticdaytrips.com/2022/11/zoo-lights-at-pittsburgh-zoo/ Colonial Williamsburg’s Christmas wreaths are famous, evoking the spirit of simpler times, colonial American can-do spirit, and a nostalgic and idealized view of Christmas that focuses less on plastic Santa Claus light-up figures and more on family traditions. Frederick and Louise Vanderbilt built their Vanderbilt Mansion, in Hyde Park NY, high above the Hudson River.
