What to Expect

Sailing Through the Winter Solstice features a diverse array of 28 illuminated boats, each with unique designs and stories.

Each boat is uniquely designed and sponsored by local businesses or groups, representing a specific nonprofit organization. Visitors can vote for their favorite boats by donating $5 per vote, with all proceeds benefiting the associated charities. In the 2023-2024 season, the event raised more than $133,000 for Frederick County nonprofits.

Look for the infamous Snallygaster, a trio of boats drawing inspiration from local folklore, depicting the mythical Snallygaster creature—a dragon-like beast said to inhabit the Frederick area. Also a favorite is The Black Pearl, a pirate ship replica capturing the adventurous spirit of seafaring lore. The illuminated boats are primarily anchored between Market Street and Carroll Street, a central section of the park that spans roughly 0.85 miles

A leisurely stroll along this portion of the creek allows visitors to enjoy the festive display, with the entire walk typically taking about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on your pace and the time spent admiring each boat.

Along the way, you’ll find various specialty shops, outdoor dining options, breweries, and a distillery, enhancing the overall experience

Convenient public parking is available at the Carroll Creek Public Parking Garage on 44 E. Patrick Street, just a short walk from the display.
