The weather is cool, leaves are starting to turn the gorgeous colors of fall. It’s the perfect time to go on a day trip! Here’s what my favorite 5 October activities:
5. Checking out a quaint town!
Shop for antiques and browse the boutiques in quaint little towns like New Market (one of my favs) in Maryland, Front Royal in Virginia, or Doylestown in Pennsylvania. All these places have cute cafes and diners to enjoy a bite to eat after an enjoyable afternoon of shopping.
4. Go bike riding!
The weather is brisk and cool, the leaves are in full color, and the bike paths beckon! Perfect choices during the fall: the Heritage Trail, the NCR Trail, the Western Maryland Rail Trail, and of course, anywhere along the C&O Canal!
3. Go to the National Apple Harvest Festival
Just north of Gettysburg, PA, all apples everywhere are celebrated at the National Apple Harvest Festival the first and second weekend of October. Lots of arts and crafts, historic cars, and lots of apples served up in a different ways, along with a lot of fun!
2. Enjoy a Ghost Tour
There’s nothing that says Halloween like a creepy ghost tour! You get to hear interesting stories told (and who doesn’t enjoy a good story?) while seeing interesting sights and strolling around on a pleasant evening. I’ve discovered that many historic town offer ghost tours! Check out more about ghost tours in Washington, DC; Frederick, Ellicott City and Annapolis. 1. Go leaf peeping
I never get tired of enjoying the color and splendor of autumn leaves. It’s a perfect time to enjoy a drive. My favorite destination? The Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park for autumn color (plus, Front Royal puts on a fun Leaf Festival!). But almost any forested destination would do. One of these years, I’m going to re-hike Ricketts Glen Falls State Park — seeing all those waterfalls would be gorgeous in the fall!
